Understanding Spousal Support Duration in Washington State

Spousal support, often referred to as alimony or maintenance, is a financial arrangement that may be awarded to one spouse following a divorce. In Washington, courts have broad discretion when determining both the amount and duration of spousal support. At Johnson Law Firm, P.C., we help Spokane residents navigate these financial issues with clarity and confidence.

Types of Spousal Support in Washington

Washington law recognizes three main types of spousal support:

  1. Temporary Support – Granted during the divorce process to help the lower-earning spouse maintain financial stability.
  2. Short-Term or Rehabilitative Support – Typically awarded for a limited time post-divorce to allow one spouse to become self-sufficient, such as completing education or job training.
  3. Long-Term or Permanent Support – More common in long marriages, this support may be ongoing or last for an extended period, particularly when one spouse is unlikely to become financially independent due to age or health.

How Courts Determine Duration

There is no strict formula for how long spousal support lasts in Washington. However, courts commonly consider:

  • Length of the marriage – Generally, the longer the marriage, the longer the support period. A rule of thumb often used is one year of support for every three to four years of marriage, though this is not guaranteed.
  • Age and health of both spouses
  • Earning capacities and employment histories
  • Standard of living during the marriage
  • Time needed for the recipient spouse to become self-supporting

Modifications and Termination

Spousal support is not always set in stone. Washington allows for modification of spousal support orders if there is a significant change in circumstances—such as job loss or a major health issue.

Additionally, spousal support usually terminates upon the remarriage of the receiving spouse or the death of either party.
